Laps for Telethon
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008KARRINYUP MALL WALKERS DO LAPS FOR TELETHON
Karrinyup Shopping Centre mall walkers will help raise $22,000 for Telethon by participating in their first ever Lapathon, held over eight sessions from 13 May to 6 June.
The fundraising exercise leads up to the centre’s Sunday Trade Day on 15 June when a range of exciting activities will be held including a Fat Cat Show, with all proceeds going to Telethon.
The lapathon will take place during the regular mall walking sessions held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:45am to 8:45am with the group walking through the centre at their own pace and recording their laps.
Each participant will be sponsored by their friends and family who will donate a designated amount per lap or a lump sum.
There are great prizes on offer for those who raise the most money or walk the furthest distance and there is also a special ‘Miss Congeniality’ prize to be won.
The Karrinyup mall walking group is coordinated by the Injury Control Council of Western Australia and Karrinyup Shopping Centre. The group is free to join and has been running since February 2007.
Mall walking eliminates the barriers to exercise often experienced by older Australians by providing a safe and secure exercise environment and an opportunity for social interaction.
Aimed at those over 60 years of age but open to all, the mall walking group encourages older Australians to remain physically active which helps reduce their risk of falling.
Walking helps to maintain strength, slow osteoporosis, improve balance and coordination, assist joint movement and improve cardiovascular stamina.
Karrinyup Centre Manager Steven Ihm said the centre mall walking group has been a great success with members often meeting for coffee and morning tea after they complete their walk.
“We’re looking forward to raising a record amount of money for Telethon this year and the support of our mall walkers with the lapathon will help ensure that happens,” he said.
Last year, Karrinyup and Garden City Shopping Centres joined forces for a combined Sunday Trade Day to raise an amazing $40,000 for Telethon.
